Cherry blossoms and tangerines are traditional symbols during Chinese New Year. Blossoms are for new beginnings, and tangerines are for luck and prosperity. I’ve created a wreath to display these two symbols in my own way, making blossoms and tangerines out of felt. Here’s how I made my Cherry Blossom and Tangerine Lunar New Year Wreath.
- Felt in different colors
- Templates to trace circles (you can use bowls/cups that are the approximate size), or an adjustable circle cutter such as this one (affiliate link)
- Needle and thread
- Poly fiber stuffing
- Hot glue
- Wood skewer
- 12-inch wreath form
I made three sizes of tangerines, eight tangerines total. The process is similar to making a fabric yoyo, except you’ll stuff it and add a leaf. So first, cut out three sizes of circles: 4 inches, 4.5 inches, and 5.5 inches in diameter. Please be aware of fuzzy cat tails when cutting circles.
With needle and thread, do a running stitch along the edge of your felt circle.
When you’ve gone all the way around, pull on the thread and it will start to gather, forming a pouch. I like to pull on the knotted end as well as the needle end to make it easier to close up later.
Add a handful of stuffing…
…and pull both ends of the thread to close it up. When the hole is pulled closed as much as you can, tie a knot with the two ends and trim off the thread. Here are the three sizes you’ll end up with…about 1.75 inches, about 2 inches, and about 2.5 inches across.
I cut simple leaf shapes with about a 1/2 inch stem.
To attach them, I put a dollop of hot glue into the hole of the tangerine, and poked the stem of the leaf into the hole with a skewer so I didn’t burn myself. For some, I added another leaf in the same manner. If I needed to hide the hole a little bit better, I folded over the leaf and glued it down underneath.
All done with the tangerines!
Next I made the cherry blossoms. These blossoms are 2 inches across, and I made 12 blossoms in 3 colors. Click here for my easy felt flower tutorial.
I wrapped my wreath form in butcher’s twine, and hot glued my tangerines and blossoms all around it. You can arrange them however you wish; mine are in asymmetrical groupings.
