Today I’m sharing a fun, quick, and easy way to package your kid’s classroom Valentines this year: Twist Tie Valentines! You can use my free printable with punny Valentine animals, or you can simply use hearts or other shapes. And, you can tie them around a bag of candy, a lollipop, or even non-candy treats like pencils or bubbles. Here’s how to make them!
Twist Tie Valentines
Supplies (contains affiliate links to my favorites)
- Twist ties
- Punny Animal Printable (scroll down to the end of the post to download)
- White for printable
- Any color for back of printable
- Light colored for “From” heart
- Dark colored for large heart
- Xyron 1.5-inch Create-A-Sticker
- Xyron 5-inch Creative Station
- 1-inch and 3/4-inch heart punch
- Paper trimmer (or scissors and ruler)
- Decorative edge punch
- 1/4-inch hole punch
- Or you can cut everything out with your Cricut Explore
You can use any shape to make these twist ties, but I’m doing a tag on one end using my printable, and hearts on the other end with “From” and my girls’ names written on them. First I’ll go over how to make the hearts. I punched out large hearts in dark pink, two for each twist tie. Then, I printed “From” and my girls’ names underneath on MS Word onto light pink cardstock, and centered a smaller heart punch over the words. You can also punch out the smaller hearts and hand write it.
Apply adhesive to the small heart and one of the big hearts. I used my little Xyron.
Adhere the large heart to one end of the twist tie, and layer the other large heart over it, sandwiching the twist tie in between.
Then, adhere the small heart over one of the large hearts. All done with one end! You can do hearts or any other shape on the other side with a Valentine’s Day message.
If you have a Cricut Explore, it’s easy to cut and write out all of your hearts. A basic heart shape is free, and you can write the “From” part with the pen (I used the “Simple Celebrations” free font). Below, I have the large heart that will get cut, and the smaller heart is a separate layer that will be written then cut out of different paper. Then you would just have to cut another set of just the large hearts to sandwich the twist tie.
If you’d like to use my printable, print it out on white cardstock and cut it into rectangles. I stacked a piece of dark pink cardstock underneath so I would simultaneously cut rectangles for the back to save time. If you have a rectangular punch, you could use that too (a gift tag punch would also be cute).
Then repeat! I ran the printable pieces through my larger Xyron…
And adhere it as before. I then used a scallop edge punch to the bottom edge.
And I punch two holes at the bottom to tie a twine bow.
These twist ties are great for closing up a little bag of candy, or you can wrap them around other candies like a lollipop.
You can also wrap them around non-candy gifts, like pencils or bubbles.
