DIY Black Cat Shoe Clips
Supplies (contains affiliate links)
- Black felt
- Freezer paper
- Cat embroidery template printable (<== click to download)
- Iron and ironing board
- Contrasting embroidery floss (I used a golden yellow)
- Embroidery needle
- Shoe clips
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Download and print the embroidery template, making sure you print on the dull side of the freezer paper, not on the shiny side. Trim the paper so you just have the two cats on a rectangular piece. Then, cut two pieces of black felt the same size as the rectangle. Place the freezer paper shiny side down on to the felt. Using your iron, fuse the freezer paper to the felt.
Cut two cats out, through two pieces of felt. So in the end, you’ll have four cat pieces.
Leave the freezer paper onto the top piece of felt and keep the bottom piece separate. Then choose your embroidery floss. I went with a golden yellow.
Thread your embroidery needle and begin stitching. First start stitching the face along the outlines on the template. I used a simple back stitch. Once you’ve stitched the eyes, nose, and mouth, carefully peel off the freezer paper. Repeat with the other kitty.
Now stack the embroidered piece on top of the other cat piece. You’ll do a blanket stitch all around the edges to sew the two layers together. Cut about an arm’s length of thread, and tie a knot at the end. Hide the knot in between the two layers by threading the needle through the front piece, from back to front, so the knotted end is hidden in between the two layers.
Continue with the blanket stitch…here’s a quick tutorial. 1) Go through both layers of felt from back to front, going through the hole in the first stitch you made. 2) Before you pull the loop completely closed, thread your needle through the loop. This is your first blanket stitch. 3) Begin the next stitch about 1/4 inch away, going through both layers. 4) Again, thread your needle through the loop before you close it. Repeat this all around until you get back to the starting point again.
After you’ve gone all the way around with your blanket stitch, here’s how to finish the end. 5) Tie a knot, but don’t trim the end off yet. 6) Insert your needle in between the two layers of felt, in between two blanket stitches, and work it to the other side, making sure you don’t poke the needle through either piece of felt. 7) Pull it out the other side, in between two blanket stitches. 8) Pull gently on the thread, like a drawstring (so kitty will scrunch up a little bit) and cut off the excess.
Last step is to apply the shoe clip. First place it onto your shoes to check out the positioning of the clip. This will help you figure out where to put the clip on the cat.
Then hot glue the clip to the back of the cat. You can also glue a small piece of felt to the inside to the clip to protect your shoes.
All done! My DIY Black Cat Shoe Clips were so fun and easy to make.
Trick or Treat, I’ll be wearing my black cat shoe clips on my feet this Halloween! This is a cute way to be festive without wearing a full costume.
