I found some wire wreath forms at the thrift store a while back. I’ve seen them in the floral section at the craft store. They’re already quite inexpensive but at the thrift store they were less than a buck each. These wreath forms are usually meant to be covered up completely, but this time, I’ve made them part of my modern Spring wreath with some super easy DIY felt flowers that you can use in this project as well as many others.
I didn’t mean to display the wreaths together. I was going to put one on my door and one inside. But I had stacked them together I loved the look. They also look nice hung with this vintage gold frame.
Modern Spring Wreath with DIY Felt Flowers
Supplies (contains affiliate links)
- Wire wreath forms (similar to this one)
- Spray paint
- Fabric scissors
- Glue gun and Hot glue sticks
- Floral wire
- Wire cutters
First, I spray painted my wreath forms. I have two wreath forms so I did two different colors. Allow to dry completely.
Then I worked on my leaves. I cut a regular leaf shape from some felt.
Then I folded the leaf lengthwise and cut slits all along the cut edges of the leaf, not going through to the other side and at a slight angle.
So you have sort of a fern-ish leaf.
Add a bead of hot glue about 2/3 along the center of the leaf.
Place a piece of floral wire on the glue, using a toothpick or skewer to press the wire into the glue so you don’t burn yourself. Trim the floral wire to 1-2 inches.
Make several leaves in different sizes. Once the glue is dry, you can bend the wire to give your leaves a curved shape.
For the flowers, cut five circles out of felt. Mine were 1.5 inches in diameter. One the first circle, add a bead of glue diagonally along one edge of the circle, as shown.
Layer the next circle over the glue, as shown.
Repeat with four of the circles, starting to form a flower shape.
Add a bead of glue to the fourth circle, and press the fifth circle onto the glue as before. Then, add a bead of glue to the fifth circle, as before.
Lift up the first circle and overlap it onto the fifth circle. This will cause the flower to pucker forward a bit, making it look more like a flower.
To make the center of the flower, cut a 3 inch piece of felt. Then cut slits along one long edge, halfway through, about 1/8 inches apart.
Roll the felt strip until there’s about 1 inch left, and add a bead of glue. Continue rolling over the glue until the end is secure.
Add hot glue to the middle of the flower and press the rolled up felt into the glue so the fringe is on top. Fan out the fringe with your fingers.
Now to assemble the wreath. Cut a scrap of felt and arrange the leaves on it. Hot glue the leaves by the wire stems.
Then, hot glue the flowers to the scrap, hiding the stems, and hot glue the whole thing to the wreath form.
You can bend the leaves in different directions and the wreath can be rotated so the flowers are on top, on the bottom, or on the sides.
As mentioned, you can hang your modern Spring wreath by itself or make two to hang together, and the flowers can be anywhere on the wreath. And make these flowers to decorate anything! Make just a few as I did, or make a whole bunch. You can even use them to make hair clips, head bands, or brooches.
