Welcome to The Silly Pearl! My name is Steph, and I’ve been blogging since 2008, but crafting for pretty much for my entire life. My husband and I have been married for more than 10 years, and we have twin girls born in 2007. We also have a sweet medium-haired tabby cat named Sherry. I enjoy ALL kinds of crafts as well as DIY – sewing, jewelry making, and painting/reupholstering furniture are among my favorites. I also love vintage, particularly mid-century modern collectibles (I love Pyrex!). If I’m not making something, I’m usually hunting for something nostalgic at the thrift store!
The Silly Pearl is all about creating for my home and family (even Sherry!). The heart of this blog is my craft tutorials, where I hope I can share my ideas and techniques to help you get creating on your own. I love the process of figuring out how to make something that is in my head, gathering my supplies, and watching those supplies form into something completely new! Often, I create to meet a need or solve a problem (most of my craft room projects, for example, help me keep organized). Or, I create to honor a particular person or celebrating an occasion. We’re also in the process of decorating our forever home, to make it a pretty, happy, cozy, and memory-filled place.
So what does “The Silly Pearl” mean? It’s my childhood nickname, by my parents (in Cantonese – “Soh Jee”). It can mean “Silly Pearl”, “Silly Precious”, or “Silly Pig” (so it was fitting that my girls would be born in the Year of the Pig!). My nickname was my parents’ way of saying that despite my many quirks and imperfections, I’m still precious to them. My parents are probably the two most influential creative forces in my life. My dad is the quintessential nerd with a creative side, who loves woodworking, painting, and has the neatest handwriting I’ve ever seen. My mom, an avid knitter, jewelry maker and amazing cook, is the one who encourages all my creative endeavors; as a kid she taught me to sew and took me to any art and craft class I wanted to attend. She is now my biggest cheerleader and I look up to her both as a woman, mother and professional.
Who knew that I would marry a guy who also loves to cook and woodwork! And don’t tell him I told you, but he can also create a lovely and very professional-looking hand-tied bouquet. And my girls love to draw, make up funny stories, sing, and craft, so maybe they too will find reward and solace in creating, no matter what they pursue in the future.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I hope you’ll follow along, and if you have any questions or just want to say hi, you can find me here or send me an email: steph2pigs at gmail.
